What is the name of the Moslem pilgrim who smuggled fertile beans from the Ottoman Turks and planted them in the Mysore Mountains of India?

The answer is Baba Budan.

In the 1500’s the Ottoman Turks monopolized the coffee trade. They ruled all the land that coffee was produced on and intended to keep it that way. In fact, all the green coffee beans they exported were steeped in boiling water for a few second, enough to render the seeds infertile.

Then some time in the 1600’s, Baba Budan came along and smuggled out some fertile seeds strapped to his belly. He planted them somewhere in the Mysore mountains in India, where they flourished. And from there, coffee eventually made its way around the globe.

The answer is The Green Tavern, which was used as a meeting place by several secret groups including the Sons of Liberty. The Boston Tea Party was planned there and Paul Revere set out from there to Lexington on his famous midnight ride.

Can we have live coffee trivia??
I think live coffee trivia is something definitely worth considering. We’d have to get everybody together before or after the race, though. If we have some sort of tumblr meet-up we can do it then.

Updates to Tuesday Coffee Trivia.

Sorry, guys. I have been under the weather with some stomach bug. And I was so distracted with stuff that I simply forgot about it until a few minutes ago. I think I will have to re-schedule for tomorrow.

Also, I want to let you guys know that I am going to make a few changes effective immediately.

First of all, I notice that there are always people who get left out because they are not online right at 8:00 when I post the question. It’s not fair for you to miss out just because you check tumblr a few minutes late. Right?

So from now on, I’ve decided to give people 24 hours to answer the trivia question. You’ll have plenty of time to research the answer and send it to me privately. And at 9:00 PM on Wednesday, I will select a winner at random and announce him/her on tumblr.

Sound good?

Another thing I will start to do is post the correct answer to the question when the winner is announced. Just because you don’t want free coffee does not mean you don’t want to know the answers. Right? Thanks for the suggestion, Troeger.
